Random video chat took off with Chatroulette in 2009 and Omegle's video mode soon after. The idea has stayed the same: press start, see a stranger, and press next if the conversation does not click. Omegle closed in 2023, and a wave of alternatives now competes for the same audience, from simple roulette sites to apps with filters and profiles.

How matching actually works

Most platforms put everyone who presses start into a queue and pair people as fast as possible. Filters narrow that queue by gender, country, language or interests. The fewer people match your filter, the longer you wait. Some platforms also use behaviour signals, such as how quickly people skip you, to decide who you see next.

Tips for better random chats

• Make sure your face is lit from the front; dark screens get skipped instantly.
• Say hello and ask a question in the first few seconds.
